About the Minnesota Lawyer Referral and Information Service

The Minnesota Lawyer Referral and Information Service (MNLRIS) connects persons with legal issues to one of over 200 qualified private attorneys practicing in over 50 areas of law. Referral counselors are available who can set up appointments with attorneys, provide general information about the legal process, and direct people to appropriate legal resources. Referral counselors are not attorneys; however, they can help clients focus on their legal issues and determine the type of assistance needed.

How We Are Different

The Minnesota Lawyer Referral and Information Service is a public service of the Hennepin and Ramsey county bar associations.  We are non-profit and meet the strict requirements of the American Bar Association.

By using our service, you can be assured that the attorney we refer you to is 1) Licensed with the State of Minnesota, 2) in good standing with the Lawyer’s Professional Responsibility Board, 3) is covered by malpractice insurance, and 4) has the experience necessary to handle your case.

How We Work

If you would like to meet with an attorney, call the MNLRIS on Monday – Friday from 9:00 – 4:30 PM.  A referral counselor will review your legal issue, obtain important information, conduct a conflict check, and set an appointment with a qualified attorney at a convenient time and location. Often, appointments can be scheduled for the next day.

Alternatively, MNLRIS also provides an online Self-Referral service that is available 24/7.  Based on the information provided, Self-Referral users will be instantly provided with the name and contact information of a vetted attorney who practices in the appropriate area of law. It will be your responsibility to contact with the attorney to set up the initial consultation; however, by using the service, you are giving the attorney permission to contact you.

Unsure if you need an attorney or what area of law is appropriate in your case?  Click here to ask a referral counselor for guidance.

MNLRIS charges a $30 administrative fee to maintain this service for the public. This fee is waived in cases of Personal Injury, Product Liability, Medical or Legal Malpractice, Social Security Disability, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and Workers’ Compensation.

There is no additional charge by the attorney for the initial consultation. Following the consultation, if you choose to hire the attorney, all fees are negotiated between you and the attorney.

Preparing for Your Initial Consultation

The 30-minute consultation through the MNLRIS is your opportunity to learn about your legal situation.

The attorney will:

  • Explain your legal issue and the legal process in language you can understand. The attorney will also help you better understand your rights and your options.
  • Discuss the consequences of the legal actions you may take.
  • Estimate the time and money required to resolve your legal problem.

You can expect the following from the initial consultation:

  • The attorney will provide up to 30 minutes of free consultation. Your discussion with the attorney is completely confidential.
  • The attorney will be respectful and professional and will not pressure you into legal representation. If the attorney is not able to help you, feel free to contact MNLRIS for a second referral. There is no additional $30 fee.

Make the most of your consultation by preparing in advance.

Summarize your legal situation in writing, including the names, phone numbers, and addresses of all persons involved. Bring any paperwork that you think will help the attorney understand your case.
